Environment activists in Korea expressing deepest condolences and
calling for thorough investigation
March 3, renowned Honduras campaigner Berta Caceres was murdered by a group of gunmen. Berta Caceres won the Goldman Environmental Prize for her contribution for the past 10 years to lead fight against the construction of Agua Zarca Dam, along the Gualcarque River, in western Honduras, on sacred territory inhabited by the indigenous Lenca people.
Environment activists in Korea, including Choi Yul, the winner of the 1995 Goldman Environmental Prize gathered together March 7 in front of the Honduran embassy in Seoul to mourn and pay tribute to the death of Berta Caceres. They also called for thorough investigation and fact finding to the government of Honduras.
Meanwhile, The New York Times reported that her death evidently showed how poor the human rights conditions of the nation are and criticized the government of Honduras. The Academy Award winning actor and environmentalist Leonardo DiCaprio lamented her death saying “The world has lost an incredible leader. We should all honor the brave contribution of Caceres.”
The Goldman Environmental Prize is one of the most prestigious prizes awarded annually to environmental activists across the world, who made great contribution in environmental sector and in selecting the awardees, priority is given to grassroots activists, ahead of scientists, scholars or government officials. It has been joining as a partner for , the event organized by Korea Green Foundation since 2012. The 2016 Goldman Environmental Prize award ceremony will be available across the world via facebook streaming service from 5:30 April 18 (Monday).
