The Sundarbans area inof Bangladesh is the
world's largest mangrove habitat, which offset carbon four to five times more
compare to general forests. UN has designated July 26th every year as the
'International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem' to emphasize
the importance of mangroves in the climate change response. However, the
mangrove ecosystem is largely threatened by various events, from the oil tanker
leakage incident in 2014 and indiscreet logging to eco-unfriendly agriculture. The Korea Green Foundation and BEDS
(Bangladesh Environment and Development Society) have been working together to
recover the mangrove forest in the Sundarbans area since 2015. From April to
July 2021, we newly planted 20,000 mangroves with 500 local residents,
resulting in the accumulation of 135,000 trees for the last six years, which is
equivalent to 30 soccer fields. From September 2021 to February 2022, we
are expanding our project to establishing nursery and managing the growth of
seedlings as well as plantation. The current mangrove seedlings in Bangladesh
don’t have good quality, which leads to short life span or low ability to
function. To solve this problem, we are providing capacity building program to
local female residents so that they can manage and monitor the growth of
mangrove seedlings, which ultimately aims to contribute to strengthening
climate change responding capability. The Korea Green Foundation will continue to
support the independence of environmentally vulnerable countries and
communities in Asia and build sustainable villages to respond to climate crises
