The Asia Environment Forum-2021 Global Net Zero Forum

The Asia Environment Forum is an international symposium launched by the Environment Foundation to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Korean environmental movement in May 2012. On October 27th this year, Korea Green Foundation hosted an environmental forum under the name of '2021 Global Zero Carbon Forum’ with the Gyeonggi Provincial Government by inviting environmental experts, government agencies, corporations, and officials from NGOs.

This forum was held simultaneously in a virtual format through Korea Green Foundation’s YouTube channel and an in-person event at Suwon Messe. 20 speakers from 6 countries, including Kimiko Hirata, winner of the 2021 Goldman Environment Award, Chibeze Ezekiel, winner of 2020, Sunjin Yoon, Chairman of the Carbon Neutrality Committee, and Chief Political Officer of the Delegation of the European Union in Korea, participated.

Discussions were held through three sessions on the direction in which local governments, businesses, and NGOs should move toward carbon neutrality. It was a meaningful opportunity to confirm the importance of cooperation between the government, business, and civil society in order to transform into a carbon-neutral society.

The topic of the first session was 'Energy independence status and tasks of local governments for Net Zero'. Cases of local government policies in Gyeonggi-do, the United States, and Europe were presented.

The topic of the second session was 'Startups challenging carbon reduction and how to support them'. Five companies presented business models and solutions that they are working on for practicing carbon neutrality. The final session was held under the theme of 'Citizen Action for Carbon Reduction' in order to listen to the opinions of citizens. NGOs at home and abroad were able to share what campaigns they are running for carbon neutrality.

This forum, with a total of 1,730 participants, can be seen again on Korea Green Foundation's YouTube channel.
